Secondary Stats Question

Postby ellorien » Fri Dec 07, 2012 5:52 am

Hello!

(Sorry, I seem to be asking a lot of questions lately.)

This is something that has been bugging me.

I used SimulationCraft to sim my druid with 50k iterations, for 'Patchwerk' and 'Helter-skelter' fights. Both times, it told me I should go for crit > mastery> haste. But I've seen you guys saying mastery is better? So I am confused. Should I only go for mastery if I have heroic tier, and otherwise my existing crappy gear will go better with crit as the priority?

Second, how do I know when to ignore socket bonuses and just go for pure agi gems? It confuses me because I thought that the secondary stats are now about 50% the value of a primary stat in MOP, and since the gems carry 2x the number of secondary stats as primary, that it balanced out. This is not the case? Also, is it a fixed rule that as long as the bonus isn't 60 agi, it's always better to gem pure red?

That is a crazy combination, since our crit is so low (compared to the past) that it would be #1!!

The weights keep secondary stats well below 50% in weight (AGI = ~5.06, Mastery = ~1.93) so AGI will always be a better gem choice, unless you get a socket bonus worth getting. (You can take your weights x the amount in stats for all combinations, and you would go with highest number, but 5.06 x 160 (809.6) is hard to beat!

Gems
Agi:
5.06 x 160 = 809.6
809.6

Agi/Hit:
5.06 x 80 = 404.8
1.65 x 160 = 264.0
668.8

Agi/Mastery:
5.06 x 80 = 404.8
1.93 x 160 = 308.8
717.6

You can use these numbers to do the math with each socket, to find out which one is worth more, make sure to include the socket bonus!! These are the weights I use based on a post in one of the stickies:

Agi = 5.06
Mastery = 1.93
Crit = 1.75
Haste = 1.66
Hit/Exp = 1.65

Then use wowreforge (or whatever site) to reforge for getting caps

Socket bonuses are easy: just use the generated stat values and use them to see if using pure agility gems produces higher dps value than hybrid agi/stat gems with the added socket bonus.

E.g.:

Stat values:
Agi: 4.5
Crit: 1.3
Mas: 1.5

If you have 2 yellow sockets with 120 crit bonus:

pure agi gems dps value = 160 * 4.5 * 2 = 1440
hybrid agi/mas gems dps value = (80 * 4.5 + 160 * 1.5) * 2 + 120 * 1.3 = 1200 + 156 = 1356

You can use this method to decide what gems to use in any piece of gear. Due to fact that secondary stats have much lower dps value than agility, it is safe to say that if the socket bonus is not +agility, it is always better to use pure agility gems.

Like others have said the best answer for socket bonuses will always be to do the math using some stat weights, but if you want a guideline you should generally only match the sockets if at least one of the gems is red or if the socket bonus is agility.

If SimC is saying that crit is a better stat for you it very well might be the case. I would recommend trying a full mastery set and a full crit set and simming them against each other to be sure (the scale factor tool only adds relatively small amounts of a stat, it doesn't use massive tradeoffs of reforging out of one stat into another).

Thank you for all the info! I'll keep all that in mind, and will try out a crit > mastery reforge.
